Modena's Ghirlandina Tower: getting to know the Secchia Hall better

La Secchia Rapita Hall of the Ghirlandina Tower in Modena is located about a metà altezza tra il piano di calpestio e la prima cornice marcapiano: non esiste infatti una corrispondenza tra le cornici all’esterno e le quote dei solai nella partitura interna della torre. In questa stanza è visibile una copia della famosa “secchia rapita”, collocata qui nel 1325: l’originale è attualmente conservato nel Town Hall, considerato un luogo più sicuro.
Etymology of the room derived from an event that occurred in the 1300s
La secchia è stata resa celebre dal heroicomic poem del 1630 di Alessandro Tassoni (Modena, 1565 – 1635), il quale si ispirò a un episode that occurred during the long and bloody struggles between the rival municipalities of Modena and Bologna.
During the Battle of Zappolino (15 November 1325), che vide la sconfitta del Comune di Bologna, uno squadrone di modenesi si spinse sin entro le mura della città nemica, e strappò da un pozzo pubblico una comune secchia di legno.
The bucket was triumphantly carried to Modena, dove fu racchiusa, a memoria dell’accaduto, nella prima stanza della Ghirlandina, da cui fu episodicamente sottratta nel corso di goliardiche imprese.
Come rammenta Tassoni: “But the bucket was immediately locked in the main tower, where it still stands on high as a trophy and tied with a large chain to curved stones”.

The Hall of the Stolen Bucket of Modena from the Middle Ages to the present day
The Sala della Secchia Rapita in the Torre Ghirlandina in Modena was used, from at least the 13th century until the end of the 16th century, for municipal archives.
Il locale sottostante, che oggi ospita l’ingresso, collocato in origine nel locale oggi interrato, custodiva invece l’archivio del Capitolo, together with the silverware and sacred relics from Modena Cathedral.
Finally, the room presents a fresco decorationprobably dating from the 14th century, depicting on the walls a mock vaio skin, the precious fur of imperial coats, and in the vault a starry sky.
