Ghirlandina Tower of Modena: Torresani Hall
TORRESANI HALL
La costruzione del quinto piano della Ghirlandina risale con grande probabilità al 1169 – 1184, cioè alla seconda fase costruttiva della torre (II – V piano). In origine, questo ambiente era forse meno sviluppato in verticale e venne ampliato in altezza in occasione della successiva sopraelevazione del 1261, che lo trasformerà in “Stanza dei torresani”, moving the bells to the sixth floor.
In this room lived the so-called “torresani”, guards at the service of the municipality, la cui presenza è documentata a partire dal 1306, fino alla seconda metà dell’Ottocento. Esse vegliavano sulla città, davano il segnale per l’apertura e la chiusura delle porte e rang the bells to mark the hours, to alert the population in case of danger and call them together on public occasions.
At the end of the 16th century, the Torresani room was partially transformed into open belvedere in the direction of the ducal castlealthough unfortunately few marks remain today on the floor and masonry that allow us to imagine the previous composition of the spaces.
The figured capitals of the Torresani
In the Torresani Room of the Torre Ghirlandina in Modena there are eight columns with just as many interesting capitals databili alla fine del XII secolo, cioè al termine della seconda campagna costruttiva della torre.
The Capitol of David
The Capital of David is located in the oriental triforium, sopra la colonna interna di destra per chi guarda dall’ingresso della stanza. In esso sono rappresentati i temi della Musica e della Danza, così come in alcuni rilievi angolari esterni della terza cornice marcapiano.

The Capitello dei Giudici
The Judges' Capital is located in the southern triforiumabove the central column, to the left of the person entering the room.
Risulta il più complesso a causa del maggior numero di figure presenti: in esso sembra sia rappresentato un treatise on good and bad judgements, probably a sort of memento for the judge who is about to pronounce sentence.
La critica non è concorde sull’identità dell’autore of this capitalonly considered by some scholars to be the same as the Capital of David. The two capitals share, in fact, dimensions and compositional layout, they were therefore part of a series sculpted at the same time and all’interno di un’unica bottegaprobably by two different masters.
