Come il Duomo di Modena, la torre Ghirlandina della città è una costruzione in mattoni rivestita con un paramento lapideo realizzato attraverso pietre di reimpiego, fatta eccezione per la topcovered in red ammonitic veronesehallmark of the interventions of the master champions.

The external walls present architectural decorations dialogue with a rich sculptural apparatus: ogni cornice marcapiano è ornata con archetti pensili che poggiano on figurative protomesnow partly replaced by geometric corbels. Not only that: in the corner blocks of the corners of the first three cornices are depicted fantastic beings taken from bestiaries (first frame), animals (second frame), human figures (third frame). Finally, also sculpted are the capitals of the mullioned and three-light windows.
Numerous written and iconographic sources also report the presence around the Ghirlandina tower of cheese measuring shopsconfirmed by the forms still carved in stone of the west wall.

L’incisione del “miracolo del fanciullo” di San Geminiano
Un’incisione di epoca rinascimentale la ritrae con edifici addossati alle pareti e con un’importante scultura affissa nell’arco che la collega al duomo: si tratta della statua di Agostino di Duccio, che rappresenta il “miracolo del fanciullo” di San Geminiano. This engraving illustrates one of the hagiographic texts attributing the Patron Saint of all the people of Modena l’impresa di aver salvato un bambino caduto dalla cima della torre, afferrandolo per i capelli appena in tempo per evitare l’impatto.
