SAN GEMINIANO AND THE ORIGINS OF A CATHEDRAL

Guided thematic itinerary to discover the cathedral and cathedral museums From 4 to 6 October on the occasion of Modena World Heritage in celebration

The programme of Modena World Heritage in celebration 2024 is full of opportunities to get to know the monumental complex and delve into the theme of the relationship with antiquity, the buried Roman city and what was reused of it in the construction of the monuments recognised by Unesco as World Heritage Sites, and with the key figure of St Geminianus.

The itinerary centred on the figure of Modena's patron saint guides us to discover the Cathedral and the Duomo Museums, recounting the central role played by the figure of the saint not only in the construction of the Cathedral we see today, but in the urban evolution of the entire city. Through the works that speak to us of Saint Geminianus present in the World Heritage Site and in the renovated Duomo Museums, we will retrace the history of the bishop who lived in late antique Mutina and, at the same time, the fundamental passages that led the city to transform itself into medieval Modena, in which the cult of the saint would become the catalysing nucleus of the new urban centre, gravitating around the new Romanesque cathedral by Lanfranco and Wiligelmo.
