The Metopes of Modena Cathedral: slabs with mysterious and original characters

On the salients of the diaphragm walls of Modena Cathedral, four on each side, a series of slabs carved with mysterious subjects, fabulous creatures, monstrous beings, characters in singular, acrobatic poses. 

Il nome “metope”, che ricorda l’elemento decorativo della trabeazione del tempio dorico, è stato assegnato loro solo in epoca recente, proprio per sottolineare i archaising features of the figures.

They probably represent some of those creatures that in the Middle Ages were thought to inhabit unexplored and inaccessible regionslocated at the ends of the earth. 

Con tutta probabilità queste lastre sono servite fin dall’inizio a decorare, a mascherare i salienti dei muri che scandiscono trasversalmente il tetto della cattedrale, ma in realtà there is no reliable data on their original function.

The unusual characters of the Metopes

The subjects depicted on the Metopes seem to be inspired by medieval texts such as the Liber monstrorum: forse non è un caso che nel Duomo di Modena esse siano collocate nelle zone più alte dell’edificio, anch’esse lontane e remote rispetto agli spazi concretamente abitabili della chiesa.

Nella prima antefissa del fianco nord, partendo dalla facciata, è raffigurata la Sirena bicaudata, described in the Liber Monstrorum come incantatrice che seduce con il proprio dolcissimo canto i marinai e qui rappresentata nella sua ambiguità con lunghi capelli, gambe pinnate e un sorriso agghiacciante. 

Also along the north side are the Great girl, l’Man with long hair e l’Being three-armed. 

In the antefixes facing south from the apses are the Psyllum, adolescente con il drago, l’Ichthyophagus, l’Hermaphrodite, detto “il Potta”, e gli Antipodes.
