The Fish Market Door of Modena Cathedral: an original sculptural style

La porta della pescheria del Duomo di Modena è l’unico ingresso lungo il fianco settentrionale e  owes its name to the presence, in the past, of a fish stall nearby. 

The Portal Scheme resumes that of the Major Portalwith stylophoric lions supporting the prothyrum and the jambs with telamons and an inhabited trellis, but l’apparato scultoreo parla un linguaggio diverso rispetto a quello wiligelmico. Although the portal is made up of elements that are not consistent with each other, both in size and shape, it is considered the work of a single sculptorthe Maestro di Artù. 

Sculptures with moral messages and profane subjects

The common thread for jambs, architrave and archivolt is the transmission of moral messages through subjects taken from secular literature or oral tradition. Affrontando il tema della fatica umana alla luce dell’interpretazione cristiana della realtà, le rappresentazioni riconducono comunque al divino, esplicito nella croce verdeggiante al centro dell’architrave. 

Along the outer jambs then climbs a plant shootsupported by telamones who ask for help in carrying the burden they are forced to bear, inhabited by figures from the ancient fables or medieval stories. 

If not in form, nel programma iconografico l’architrave è coerente con gli stipitipresenting on the sides of the cross four scenes from Phaedrus' fables, episodes in which the themes of abuse, fraud and hunger recur.

Il calendario di pietra lungo gli stipiti e il cavaliere Artù

The cycle of the Months runs along the inside jambs of the fish market door of Modena Cathedral, a stone calendar, in cui ogni mese è rappresentato tramite un’azione compiuta da un contadino, o in alcuni casi da un nobile, tipica di quella stagione. 

The abbreviations of the names of the months engraved entro l’arco che inquadra ogni formella  facilitano l’interpretazione delle figure, a iniziare da gennaio nella formella in basso a destra fino a giugno in alto, per poi riprendere da luglio nella formella in basso a sinistra e terminare con dicembre.

La portal decoration ends on a high note with the scenes from the Arthurian cycle dell’archivolto. Sei cavalieri armati sono disposti simmetricamente ai due lati dell’arco diretti alla chiave di volta, dove è raffigurato un castello in cui una donna è tenuta prigioniera. 

Above the scene are engraved the names of the characters, including that of Artù, il secondo cavaliere da sinistra, l’unico a volto scoperto. This is certainly an early representation of the legend, con la critica che si divide tra una datazione anteriore e una posteriore alla redazione in forma scritta del racconto, avvenuta a metà del XII secolo.
